The Power of Affirmations

The Power of Affirmations

When you think of daily affirmations what is your first thought? Maybe this cute gal? Or maybe this. Either way, affirmations kind of get a bad wrap. It may seem like it is cheesy or hokey, I thought those same things before I started doing them! There is so much science to back up why affirmations are important, and I have seen a huge difference in my life since I have started them!

I have been doing affirmations every single day in my pregnancy, to re frame my brain to think about pregnancy as natural, normal and healthy. I have been reminding myself about how beautiful this journey is and on multiple occasions have used my affirmations to calm my fears. Just this week, I was worried when I found out that our little Thomas was “breech”. I immediately added affirmations about him turning, getting into the proper place, and helping him go Occiput Anterior. After just a few days, I felt him turn down into the right position. I attribute this, in large part to my affirmations.

There are many benefits to affirmations.  In fact, a recent study revealed that optimistic people have healthier hearts. One of the best ways to create optimism and positivity is daily affirmations to yourself. Not only this, but it cultivates gratitude and keeps you in a constant state of daily gratitude. In large part this is because, as you do affirmations you become acutely aware of your daily thoughts and words, reducing the risk of letting negativity and self sabotaging thoughts from seeping in. Affirmations can be a constant reminder of the blessings and gifts you have,  and can keep you surrounded by the things you want in your life. It’s a great way to quickly remind yourself of the things that matter most and push aside the distractions in life.

For those of you that don’t know me, I am a singer. When I was in high school, I told my mom that I wanted to focus my efforts on singing the national anthem. I loved how I felt when I sang the national anthem. People respected you, there was a sacredness associated, and it was vocally challenging. She told me to affirm out loud that was what I wanted. I kind of laughed… but I did it. I verbally affirmed that I was going to have the opportunity to sing the national anthem. The next day guess what happened? Miss America called and asked me to sing the national anthem at the Miss America pageant! Whaaaatttttttt?!? I was totally convinced.

Since then, I have used affirmations to do everything from tell my body to get better when I am sick, to affirming that I will win free things, or simply just remind myself that everything will work out. Putting verbal words behind my desires makes them so powerful!

Sometimes my affirmations are more vague and person, like a reminder that I am beautiful and lovable. Whatever your circumstances you can start doing affirmations daily. You can do it in the shower, in the car, in the kitchen or right as you walk out the door. Take a few minutes and write down your goals, dreams, plans, how you want your life to go, etc. As I mentioned earlier, this has tremendously aided me in my pregnancy.  If you’re new to affirmations and don’t know where to start I’ve made a list of a few ideas that you can use!
